Calculus is the result of your mouth trying to counter plaque bacteria. Your saliva works to kill the bacteria, but that destruction leaves mineral deposits, as does gingival crevicular fluid, which is created by the bacteria. The good news is that you can fight calculus with your regular brushing and flossing routine, as well as biannual visits to the dentist – sometimes we’ll use a tool called a periodontal scraper to clean the calculus from your teeth, and there are ultrasonic and other tools that work well, also.
If you experience bleeding gums, receding gums, and general discoloration of your teeth, please make an appointment with Goliad Dental so we can address your dental issues. After all, clean teeth are crucial to a clean bill of health!
